Electric bikes are taking the world by storm, so it’s no surprise that the innovation behind customising them knows no bounds. The GRID Street Tracker is a shining example of how two Australian companies, Australian Electric Motor Co and Purpose Built Moto, have electrified the streets. Their partnership gave birth to a remarkable custom electric motorcycle, built upon the foundation of a 2015 Zero SR.

A Box of Potential

The GRID Street Tracker project began with a vision: to transform the boxy and somewhat kooky Zero SR into a machine that would captivate riders with its style and performance. Electric motorcycles, while environmentally friendly and efficient, often suffer from a lack of mainstream appeal due to their unconventional aesthetics. The challenge was clear – make the Zero SR look as exhilarating as it feels to ride.

From Commuter to Custom

The 2015 Zero SR chosen for this project had already lived a life as a dedicated commuter in the bustling streets of Sydney for five years. Its high mileage was indicative of its reliability, but it needed some tender loving care to shine once again. The team knew that to create a showstopper, they needed to service the bike thoroughly, install new wheels and tires, and give it a meticulous deep clean.

The Mastermind Behind the Transformation

Tom Gilroy from Purpose Built Moto took the reins of this electrifying project. His mission was to craft the ultimate city commuter bike that could double as a weekend thrill-seeker. Electric motorcycles are renowned for their efficient urban travel, but they often sport quirky designs that deter mainstream riders. Tom’s objective was to make the GRID Street Tracker look and feel like the embodiment of fun and power.

Functional and Stylish Upgrades

The GRID Street Tracker received a series of upgrades that not only enhanced its appearance but also improved its functionality. The addition of a storage tank, perfectly sized for a six-pack of beer or any valuables you need to transport, eliminates the need for a top box. Excel rims, hubs, and motard wheels were integrated to enhance handling, particularly in the city. The chain conversion replaced the standard belt drive, providing more uniform power delivery while eliminating issues related to torque generated by the original setup.

Engineering Challenges: Frame Modification

One of the most formidable challenges the team faced was the modification of the Zero SR’s heavy-duty aluminum frame. This demanding task required the removal of the rear end and a complete rebuild to alter the bike’s stance and give it the unmistakable tracker-inspired appearance.

Unleashing Electrifying Performance

The GRID Street Tracker boasts impressive performance credentials, capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 3.3 seconds. With a mixed riding range of 160 kilometers, it’s a reliable companion for city commuting and beyond. The upgrades in wheels and tires significantly enhance its handling, while the chain conversion ensures a smooth and predictable power delivery.

The GRID Street Tracker is a statement of what can be achieved when creativity, innovation, and craftsmanship come together. It’s a testament to the potential of electric motorcycles to not only lead the way in sustainability but also captivate riders with style and performance. With projects like this, the future of custom electric motorcycles looks electrifyingly bright.
