Starting with a Fresh Canvas
To bring the GRID SM to life, the team started with a brand-new Zero FXS. This particular model was a rare find, imported all the way from the UK to Australia in 2021. It’s important to note that this model was not readily available in the Australian market, making it a truly unique starting point for this electrifying project.
The Creative Mind Behind It All
Tom Gilroy, the mastermind at Purpose Built Moto, was entrusted with the task of creating this unique electric marvel. The client, who owns a property in the scenic Byron Hinterland, had a clear vision in mind. He wanted a bike that could effortlessly zip into town for daily errands while offering a thrilling experience on the winding country roads. It had to be light, quick, electric, and compatible with his off-grid setup for convenient charging. In a world of cookie-cutter electric motorcycles, the client sought something different, something that would stand out in Australia.
A Unique Hand-Crafted Marvel
The GRID SM’s standout feature is its entirely hand-shaped aluminum body. This choice not only enhances its strength but also ensures a feather-light ride. Zero motorcycles often feature angular lines that give off a commuter bike vibe, but that’s precisely what the GRID SM wanted to break away from. The design speaks of pure fun and excitement, no matter where you’re headed. With a high seat height and imposing front fork, it offers a fantastic riding position. To achieve this, the team flattened the top of the bike by removing Zero’s signature seat bump, tail lift, and angular tank. The Purpose Built Moto lighting adds a touch of classic styling, replacing the futuristic, boxy headlights and blinkers with a more timeless look.
The Challenges: Rare Find and Road Approval
The journey of creating the GRID SM was not without its challenges. The first hurdle was obtaining the donor bike, a rare find in Australia due to its limited availability. Once secured, the next hurdle was getting it road-approved without the support of the manufacturer, which presented its own set of complexities.

When it comes to performance, the GRID SM does not disappoint. It can go from 0 to 100 km/h in a blistering 3.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 138 km/h. With a range of 80 to 100 kilometres, it’s the perfect urban companion, and its wheelie prowess adds an extra layer of excitement to the ride.
